Chapter twelve

“Does this look ripe?” Alex held up a huge apple. He needed to get out of the house, so I agreed to let him go grocery shopping with me. The question reminded me why I rarely took him to the store.

“It’s an apple. If it’s not ripe now, give it a couple of days.”

He turned it over in his hand before wrestling with the produce bags. “I can never get these things to work.”

I pulled one off and opened it. “At this rate, we’re going to be here all day.”

He shook his head. “Apex predators are supposed to be patient when hunting, Lily.”

“You’re soooo right, Alex. I’ll try to remember that the next time I’m stalking an apple in a grocery store.”

“Temper, temper.” He batted at the grapes as I shoved them into a bag.

I pushed the cart toward the cereal aisle. “We need to take care of those guys who are after you before you lose your mind.”

He added sugary cereal to the cart. “Yes, we do.”

It took us almost two hours to make our way through the store, and I was ready to snap by the time we got to the self-checkout. Alex insisted on running the items through the scanner while I unloaded and bagged.

As he reached for our receipt, he froze and tilted his head. “We need to leave now.”

My hands shook as I grabbed the cart and moved as fast as I could without drawing attention. Alex took it from me when we got outside so I could enhance my senses. I used my vampire speed to load the groceries while he blocked me from human view. “There’s ten of them heading this way fast.”

I hit the button to close the hatch. “Let’s go.”

By the time the back closed, I had the van started. I spotted a black SUV at the other end of the parking lot. “Is that Jed?”

Alex’s eyes glazed over. “Yes. He plans to take you by force because you didn’t RSVP to that invitation.”

I shuddered. “Damn it! I told you we needed to hurry, but noooo. Predators need to be patient.” I said the last part in a childish voice.

“It’s true, though. Take a right.”

I didn’t question him because Alex was great at plucking information out of people’s heads. I pushed the hands-free phone button. “Call Roman.”

It rang once, followed by a female voice. “House of Roman, how may I help you?”

“This is Lily. Tell Roman Jedediah and several vampires tried to kidnap me at the Walmart. We’re heading toward I-84 west in Caldwell.”

“I will relay the message.”

“Sure. He needs to hurry unless he wants to deal with ten dead vampires in his territory.” I disconnected and checked the mirror. They followed at a distance. “We need a plan, Alex.”

“I’m working on it.” His fingers flew over his phone. “Dad’s in Allure, and Mom won’t reach us in time.”

I was grateful for my lightning-fast reflexes as we sped down the side-roads. The cars stayed on our tail. I screeched around the corner of our street and sped up.
